Did you know that any actively participating member of the congregation is eligible to apply? -- If you are a high school senior, full or part-time college student, or technical or trade school student and are interested in obtaining financial help with the cost of continuing your education, then perhaps we can help.
Applications can be found in the Narthex or the rear of the Sanctuary. Just pick one up, fill it out and return it to the church office between now and June 1st.
SUMMER MUSIC: Summer Special Music Needed. A sign-up sheet for summer special music is in the narthex. Please consider sharing your vocal or instrumental musical talent during a summer worship service. Please contact Choir Director Marilyn Machmer if additional information or assistance is needed.
ERIC OLIVER: One of the ministries we support through our General Mission giving is Eric Oliver’s ministry to college students at Fredonia State College, in Fredonia, NY. Eric has sent us a newsletter which is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. Takes some time and see what Eric is doing in NY.
MISSION TRIP: Since the devastating hurricanes of the summer of 2005, Presbyterians have donated over $20,300,000 for relief and $3,840,000 toward supplementing pastors’ salaries in the Gulf region. 31,350 volunteers have given 1,174,230 hours of service so that 3,380 homes could be repaired and 565 completely rebuilt.
Teams of skilled craftspeople and volunteers are still needed to continue this work of restoration and hope. Therefore, the Outreach Ministry Team is coordinating our third mission trip to the Gulf Coast. We will be leaving Saturday, June 21, 2008 and returning Sunday, June 29, 2008. Our destination this year is Pearlington, Mississippi, situated near the Pearl River just east of the border with Louisiana, Pearlington has been dubbed 'ground zero' because the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed right through it. Pearlington is an unincorporated community that has been overlooked by government help and funds.
The Outreach Ministry Team asks anyone who can lift a hammer or a paintbrush to consider coming. We especially encourage anyone with carpentry, masonry, or other construction skills to participate. Let John Milne or Jean Pinto know if you are interested in taking part in this year’s mission trip and please feel free to ask questions of any of our volunteers from earlier trips about their experiences. They will tell you it is some of the hardest, most exhausting, and most rewarding work they have ever done.
Volunteer with us. The life you transform may be your own!
CONFIRMATION CLASS is to be received into membership on Pentecost, May 11, 2008
We often hear about the miracles at Pentecost. The mighty gush of the Holy Spirit filled the disciples and tongues of fire touched believers so that all the listeners of cosmopolitan Jerusalem could hear the gospel in their own native tongues. But another great miracle of that day was that 3,000 new believers were converted and baptized. This is why we call Pentecost “the birthday of the church.”
This Pentecost we are going to celebrate this great holiday of the church by receiving into membership the five members of our Confirmation Class. Kristie Casole, Renee Cass, Lauren Kelly, Chris McHugh and Sydney Worek will be making public profession of their faith during the 11 a.m. worship service. We hope all of you will come to worship on Pentecost and support these newest disciples as they take this important step in their faith journey.
THANKS, CONGRATS, AND CONCERNS

PENTECOST OFFERING: The Pentecost Offering, for Children at Risk, Youth, and Young Adults, will be received on Sunday, May 11, 2008. Because of your gifts to the Pentecost Offering, many young adults since 1994 have served as Young Adult Volunteers; millions have been raised since 1998 for ministries with children at risk; and Presbyterian young people have developed leadership skills and a deeper faith through Presbyterian Youth Connection Assemblies.
Forty percent of the proceeds from our Pentecost Offering will be directed to United Presbyterian Church’s Katrina Mission Trip to Pearlington, MS. The other sixty percent will support Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly programs for children at risk, youth, and young adults.
Please give generously to a mission that invests in the future of our church and in the betterment of our world.
MOTHERS' DAY SHOPPING AND CHOCOLATE PARTY! Have you finished your spring cleaning but you need some new candles for your dining-room? Does your bathroom need a new 'something' on the wall? Is your Tupperware picnic pitcher over 40 and looking its age? Did you covet that nice glass mixing bowl you saw at your daughter’s house? Need spring lipstick? Are you running out of dinner table conversation? Are you looking for gifts for a confirmation, baptism, baby shower or wedding shower?
Well, do we ever have the answers to all of the above problems! On Saturday evening, May 10th, we’re inviting you and ALL of your friends to join us for some shopping, coffee and dessert here at the church. We’ll have vendors who offer quality at-home shopping. This time, they’ll be offering the same merchandise here at the church and we won’t have to have the “parties” at our homes! We’ll have craft supplies, silver jewelry, cosmetics, home-decorating items, makeup and chef items as well as collector baskets and picnic and food items.
What more could you want? Oh!.chocolate! Well, we’ll have some of that, too! Take a few minutes from your busy weekend and leave the kids at home with your husband. They’ll need some time to plan your breakfast in bed anyway.
Come any time between 5 and 8pm or come and spend the entire three hours. Make sure you tell your friends. If you have a part-time job as an at-home consultant and you’d like to participate, call me at home and we’ll talk! Hope to see you at the event!

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION:
It is late April, Spring has sprung - and the end of the Sunday School year is just three weeks away! It is time to get outside and enjoy the wonderful world God has created. It is also time for "Spring" cleaning - of our surroundings, our minds and our lives. This does not mean we have to throw everything out but rather to evaluate and savor what was good and meaningful for us. I think this type of inventory is important for us to tackle every year. We can then move forward to new activities or ventures - or continue with what has been meaningful and important for us. We do this with 'things’ and we should this with all of our activities.
Those of us in Educational Ministry celebrate the many ways we are spreading the word in this congregation. Just ask us about: Rotation, 'The Wired Word,' the Adult Sunday School Class, The Horizons Bible study, Kids Club, Sunday Morning Child Care, Youth Group, Confirmation Class, SPLASH, Survivors, VBS, the Junior High Study of the Bible, the new songs we have learned and the Frugal Gourmet.
We need to reflect on what was meaningful and good for us during the past year and be intentional of our choices for the coming months. It is good to continue with some things but it is also important to try something new and different occasionally. That is what we in the church attempt to do on a regular basis. Our educational planners have already begun to dream and plan for new programs and activities for the upcoming program year. We have several new adventures that we are looking at that will encourage greater involvement and participation among a larger group of children, youth and adults. In the coming months you will be hearing new terms such as 'Children and Worship,' 'The Thoughtful Christian,' 'WEE Believe,' and the new Study Bible - just to mention a few!
As you do your 'reflective' spring cleaning, keep in mind that keeping on old favorites is good, but choosing new activities is valuable for all of us as we seek to grow as Christians.
In Faith,
Joyce Davies,
Director of Christian Education
