WELCOME

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

March 21, 2010

PRELUDE                             “The Gift of the World Is Jesus”                                  arr. Niles

PRAISE HYMN                             “Shout to the Lord”                                 Sing the Faith 2074

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing

power and majesty, praise to the King.

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar

at the sound of your name.

I sing for joy at the work of your hands,

forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand.

Nothing compares to the promise I have in you.

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:    When all we have hoped for and trusted in has let us down;
People:   There is Christ who reaches out to us.

People:   There is Christ, reaching out for us.
Leader:    Come and let us worship the Lord who is always ready to reach out to us.
People:   We humbly come before the Lord in hope and faith.  AMEN.

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious and holy God, we thank you for the many ways that you literally touch our lives.  When we grasp the hand of a friend, we remember how you offer your comfort and guidance.  When we give the gift of a prayer shawl, we remind one another that we can be wrapped in your love and enveloped in your healing presence.  Forgive us when we are distant from you or from each other.  We offer ourselves to you.  Use our hands loving God, so that we may share the love, caring and comfort that you offer every day.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GIVE GLORY TO GOD         “Hear the Good News of Salvation”                                 355

Hear the good news of salvation: Jesus died to show God’s love.

Such great kindness!  Such great mercy!  Come to us from heaven above.

Jesus Christ, how much I love You!  Jesus Christ, You save from sin!

How I love You!  Look upon me.  Love me still and cleanse within.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD TO US

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

GOSPEL LESSON                                    Pg.  894                                              Luke 5:17-26

17 One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near by (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.  18 Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus;  19 but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus.  20 When he saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”  21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, “Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”  22 When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?  23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’?  24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.”  25 Immediately he stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God.  26 Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

A TIME WITH CHILDREN                                                                            Rev. Jean Pinto

(After “A Time With Children,” (11:00 am) parents are invited to take their children who are 5 or under to the Nursery.)

ANTHEM  (11:00 am)                            “Shine, Jesus, Shine”                             G. Kendrick

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                             Pgs. 487-488                                 Psalm 42

1 As a deer longs for flowing streams,

so my soul longs for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God,

for the living God.

When shall I come and behold

the face of God?

3 My tears have been my food

day and night,

while people say to me continually,

“Where is your God?”

 4 These things I remember,

as I pour out my soul:

how I went with the throng,

and led them in procession to the house of God,

with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,

a multitude keeping festival.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

my help  6 and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;

therefore I remember you

from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,

from Mount Mizar.

 7 Deep calls to deep

at the thunder of your cataracts;

all your waves and your billows

have gone over me.

8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,

and at night his song is with me,

a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God, my rock,

“Why have you forgotten me?

Why must I walk about mournfully

because the enemy oppresses me?”

10 As with a deadly wound in my body,

my adversaries taunt me,

while they say to me continually,

“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

my help and my God.

            Presentation

Profession of Faith                    The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth.           And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the             forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Easter Cantata

cantata

The choir will sing the cantata "At the Ninth Hour" on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010 at the 11 a.m. worship service. This year's Easter cantata is based on the Gospel of Mark and it is a retelling of the last week of Christ's life from Palm Sunday to Easter morning.

The UPW is compiling a cookbook.  Please submit your favorite recipes to Carolyn Reynolds, Jan Oliver, Barbara Kavalek or Lois Dixon by March 28th.  The cookbook will be on sale and is a project to commemorate our 5th anniversary as United Presbyterian Church in October.

During the next two months, the Adult Bible Class will be tackling two major topics: 1) Growing Like Jesus in 2010: How did the Son of God grow as a man?  How does this guide our own growth as men and women?  2) A video series on The Prayers of Jesus: Is God really like a stern judge or a cranky neighbor?  What's the key to having our prayers answered?  If you could secretly tape Jesus praying, what would you hear?  What's all this have to do with Monday morning?   Join us in the Bertolet Lounge on Sundays at 9:45 a.m.

The Women's Book Club will meet on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 pm in the Bertolet Lounge.  We will be discussing Jamie Ford's historical fiction, HOTEL on the CORNER of BITTER and SWEET.  The story is about a Chinese American, Henry Lee, who had befriended a Japanese American girl before she was sent to an internment Camp during World War II.  Years later, Henry revisits the sacrifices he has made for his family, for love, for country.  All women who enjoy books and fellowship are invited to join us.  Our April read will be OLIVER KITTERIDGE by Elizabeth Strout.

Food Collection for TASK

As part of United Presbyterian's Outreach Ministry, we collect donations of canned meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, soups, and sauces as well as boxed rice, pasta, cereals, and potatoes on the last Sunday of each month.  All of what is collected is taken to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.  Be sure to bring your non-perishable food items with you to church on March 28th, so that the abundance with which you have been blessed can be a blessing to others.
