WELCOME

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:    God created us as a people with many senses.                                                                                    People:                If we listen we can hear God.  If we open our eyes we can see God.                                                                            Leader:    God is as close as the bread and cup we touch during communion.                                                             People:                As  we receive the gifts of the table, we taste the sweetness of God’s love and are nourished by the strength of God’s glory.                                                                          Leader:        As the aroma of fresh bread fills the air, let our words of worship and praise be          lifted up to the Lord.                                                                                                                                           People:   Let us worship God with our heart, our strength, our spirit, and all our senses. Amen.

*HYMN                          “Here, O Our Lord, We See You Face to Face”                                      520

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

As Lent unfolds before us great God, we see how far we have to go to Jerusalem.  The road is long, our sins are heavy, and our burdens hold us down.  We can’t imagine new life, Easter life, because our current life is filled with bad choices and failed efforts.  Our transgressions are ever before us.  Meet us in our weakness.  Take up our sins.  Ease our burdens.  Carry us on the way.  Bring us to Jerusalem, at last.  Show us a love that is stronger than death, that no tomb can hold.  Amen.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GIVE GLORY TO GOD         “Hear the Good News of Salvation”                                 355

Hear the good news of salvation: Jesus died to show God’s love.

Such great kindness!  Such great mercy!  Come to us from heaven above.

Jesus Christ, how much I love You!  Jesus Christ, You save from sin!

How I love You!  Look upon me.  Love me still and cleanse within.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD TO US

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

GOSPEL READING                                          Pg. 892                                           Luke 4:1-13

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,  2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished.  3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.”  4 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”

5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.  6 And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please.  7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”  8 Jesus answered him, “It is written,

‘Worship the Lord your God,

and serve only him.’ ”

9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,  10 for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you,

to protect you,’

11 and

‘On their hands they will bear you up,

so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”  13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

A TIME WITH CHILDREN                                                                              Rev. Jean Pinto

(After “A Time With Children,” parents are invited to take their children who are 5 or under to the Nursery.)

ANTHEM  (11:00 am)                        “Amazing Grace”                              arr. John Ness Beck

OLD TESTAMENT READING                          Pgs. 481-482                             Psalm 34:8-22

 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good;

happy are those who take refuge in him.

 9 O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,

for those who fear him have no want.

10 The young lions suffer want and hunger,

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, O children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 Which of you desires life,

and covets many days to enjoy good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil,

and your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Depart from evil, and do good;

seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers,

to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,

and rescues them from all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,

and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord rescues them from them all.

20 He keeps all their bones;

not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil brings death to the wicked,

and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

SERMON                                                                                                            Rev. John Milne

MOMENT FOR QUIET REFLECTION

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—The Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in Jesus Christ,  fully human, fully God.   Jesus proclaimed the reign of God  preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives teaching by word and deed

and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted,  eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners,  and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.  Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition  Jesus was crucified  suffering the depths of human pain  and giving his life for the sins of the world.  God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil,  delivering us from death to life eternal.   Amen.

The Women's Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7:00 pm in the Bertolet Lounge.  We will be discussing THE SUGAR CAMP QUILT by Jennifer Chiaverini.  The setting of the story is in Creek's Crossing, PA in the years leading up to the Civil War.  The novel follows Dorothea Grangers' passage from innocence to wisdom as America struggles with the issue of slavery.  All women who enjoy books and fellowship are encouraged to join us.  Our March selection is HOTEL on the CORNER of BITTER and SWEET by Jamie Ford.

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities presents a free program “Abraham Lincoln: Man of Sorrow” on Sunday, February 21st at 1:00 pm at The Contemporary, 176 West State Street, Trenton, NJ.  Christian Johnson is an impressive Abraham Lincoln, giving special insights into our country’s great emancipator.

Easter cantata rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:30 pm.  The choir will sing the cantata "At the Ninth Hour" on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010 at the 11 a.m. worship service. This year's Easter cantata is based on the Gospel of Mark and it is a retelling of the last week of Christ's life from Palm Sunday to Easter morning.

The UPW is compiling a cookbook.  Please submit your favorite recipes to Carolyn Reynolds, Jan Oliver, Barbara Kavalek or Lois Dixon by March 28th.  The cookbook will be on sale and is a project to commemorate our 5th anniversary as United Presbyterian Church in October.

On March 2nd, the UPW will have a Coordinator’s Meeting at 9:00 am and their Bible Study and meeting at 10:30 am followed by a luncheon at 12:00 noon.  The luncheon will be at the church and will be hoagies, dessert, and beverages.  There will be a sign up sheet on the table in the narthex to register if you are coming to the luncheon so we will know how many hoagies to purchase.  All women of the church are invited to attend.

The Survivors (55 and over group) will be going on March 10th for lunch to The Dublin Square, Rt.130N. in Bordentown.  We will meet in the church parking lot at 11:30 a.m. with a 12:00 p.m. luncheon reservation.  All seniors and their friends are welcome to participate in this event. Please call Rita Peterson 259-7256 or email ritapete@optonline.net for your reservation.  Come join the Survivors for an afternoon of fun, fellowship and great food.

During the next two months, the Adult Bible Class will be tackling two major topics: 1) Growing Like Jesus in 2010: How did the Son of God grow as a man?  How does this guide our own growth as men and women?  2) A video series on The Prayers of Jesus: Is God really like a stern judge or a cranky neighbor?  What's the key to having our prayers answered?  If you could secretly tape Jesus praying, what would you hear?  What's all this have to do with Monday morning?   Join us in the Bertolet Lounge on Sundays at 9:45 a.m.

Food Collection for TASK

As part of United Presbyterian's Outreach Ministry, we collect donations of canned meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, soups, and sauces as well as boxed rice, pasta, cereals, and potatoes on the last Sunday of each month.  All of what is collected is taken to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.  Be sure to bring your non-perishable food items with you to church on February 28th, so that the abundance with which you have been blessed can be a blessing to others.
