WELCOME

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

February 14, 2010

PRELUDE                                                “Sketch”                                                Scott-Devin

PRAYER HYMN               “God, You Spin the Whirling Planets   (v. 1)                           285

God, You spin the whirling planets, Fill the seas and spread the plain,

Mold the mountains, fashion blossoms, Call forth sunshine, wind, and rain.

We, created in Your image, Would a true reflection be

Of Your justice, grace, and mercy And the truth that makes us free.

WE COME TO WORSHIP GOD

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:    We are brought here today to glimpse the hope that Christ has for us.
People:   Open our hearts to receive that hope.
Leader:    We are brought here today to be healed of our fears.
People:   Heal us, Lord Jesus, with your love and power.
Leader:    Come, let us receive the vision and healing love of God.
People:   Praise be to God who continues to bless and restore us.  AMEN.

*HYMN                                          “He Is King of Kings”                                                  153

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God hearing of Jesus’ Transfiguration, we become aware that we ourselves need to be changed.  Sin stains our lives and soils our hearts.  We are seemingly incapable of doing good and the truth is often far from us.  Cleanse us with your love.  Wipe away our transgressions.  Purify us, so that we might begin again to follow in the  way of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

SILENT PRAYER

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GIVE GLORY TO GOD

What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright”    (v. 4)                      68

To God the Father, God the Son,

And Holy Spirit, Three in one,

May every tongue and nation raise

An endless song of thankful praise.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD TO US

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

GOSPEL READING                                  Pgs. 900-901                                     Luke 9:28-36

28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.  29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.  30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him.  31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.  32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.  33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.  34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud.  35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!”  36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

A TIME WITH CHILDREN                                                                            Rev. Jean Pinto

(After “A Time With Children,” parents are invited to take their children who are 5 or under to the Nursery.)

ANTHEM  (11:00 am)                               “Beautiful Savior”                                     R. Nagy

EPISTLE READING                                Pgs. 1005-1006                      2 Corinthians  4:5-12

5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake.  6 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.  8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;  9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;  10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.  11 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you.

SERMON                                                                                                          Rev. Jean Pinto

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

This year's Easter cantata is based on the Gospel of Mark and it is a retelling of the last week of Christ's life from Palm Sunday to Easter morning.

The UPW is compiling a cookbook.  Please submit your favorite recipes to Carolyn Reynolds, Jan Oliver, Barbara Kavalek or Lois Dixon by March 28th.  The cookbook will be on sale and will be a project to commemorate our 5th anniversary as United Presbyterian Church in October.
