I see those WITH getting more and those WITHOUT getting less...you?
I see those WITH making a good show when they give to those without...but I'm not sure if it's genuine or if they feel they have to give because they do have...
I read today's passage (Luke 16:19-31) and watched the Godspell clip we watched and realized not a whole lot has changed in 2000 plus years....oh wait....something did change!
We’ve heard about the types of people Christ hung out with and guess who they weren't?! The rich, the righteous and the pious....nope....He hung with the regular folks and was down-right disappointed in those who professed to be upholders the Law of Moses.
Clearly the rich man thought he had everything going for him – including a place in heaven with Father Abraham – but boy was HE wrong! He figured he had it all and NOTHING was going to change that! Well wasn’t HE surprised when Lazarus was the one who “got it all” when he died – being carried by the angels and all right up to heaven and living the good after life! Oh how he hated being tormented – or should I say being treated the way he treated Lazarus…..that shoe sure didn’t fit well did it!
Do you think the common folk of the time felt the least bit rich? After all, rich people back then were just like many rich people today – all show – and probably most of them could care less about those who less than they did. And I’m fairly certain Father Abraham was right when he told the rich man that if his brothers couldn’t listen to Moses and the Prophets, they weren’t going to listen to some was raised from the dead…..
Thankfully, we’ve learned about Christ – who he hung out with – the things he taught – the first shall be last and the last shall be first – we Christians are rich – not in the monetary sense but as we give to others regardless of what it is we give, our fortune grows – because we are showing Christ’s love for them – regardless of who they are and what they have, or don’t have.
Each of you were given two coins when you came in today – I’d like you to keep one of your coins and bring the other one up here and deposit it in one of the cups – Hunger; Sickness; Poor; or Naked. These cups represent who we might give our riches too. After you deposit your coin, take a slip of paper out of the basket and read it when you get back to your seat – THAT is what YOU get in return when you give others who are in need.
